How to use this calculator

1. Measure your wall

Measure your wall's total length and height in feet with a tape measure. Height should run from the bottom of the buried base course — most walls bury their first course several inches below grade for stability — to the top of the finished cap, not just the visible face. Only measuring what you can see above ground is a common way to under-order blocks. For curved or terraced walls, measure each straight run separately and add the lengths together; the calculator handles the extra cutting waste as a percentage, not as separate geometry.

2. Choose a block size and shape

Pick a block size — Standard 12×4×8, Wide 16×6×12, or Extra-wide 18×6×12 — then set your wall shape: straight, curved, or terraced. Shape matters more than people expect. It's not just about looks; it drives the waste allowance baked into your block count. Straight walls carry a 5% allowance for corner and end cuts, curved walls jump to 10% for the extra cutting, and terraced (stepped) walls need 15%, since each step creates additional cut edges.

3. Set your gravel depth and backfill option

Base gravel depth defaults to 6 inches, a standard compacted-base thickness for a garden wall — go deeper for a taller or load-bearing wall. Leave backfill gravel switched on unless you're certain your soil drains well on its own: this is the drainage zone directly behind the wall, and skipping it is the single most common cause of retaining wall failure. The formula we use

Here's the exact math. Wall face area is straightforward: length × height. From there, blocks per row is your wall length divided by the block's length, rounded up, and rows needed is wall height divided by block height, rounded up. Multiply those two together, then apply the waste factor for your chosen shape — straight ×1.05, curved ×1.10, terraced ×1.15 — and round up to the nearest whole block, since you can't buy a fraction of one.

Cap blocks, if you've switched them on, add one finishing block per block-length along the wall — for the Standard block (12 inches long), that's one cap per linear foot; the Wide and Extra-wide presets need proportionally fewer, since each cap spans more ground. This capping row sits on top of the waste-adjusted total below it, not folded into the same number.

Gravel is where a lot of calculators get vague. We calculate a base trench two block-depths wide, filled to your chosen depth, converted from cubic feet to cubic yards (27 cubic feet per yard). Backfill gravel — the drainage zone behind the wall — assumes a 1 ft wide zone running half the wall's height, on the logic that a sloped gravel wedge, not a solid block of gravel, is what actually needs to drain. Landscape fabric covers the trench width plus the wall face, doubled for both sides of the gravel zone.

A worked example

Let's walk through a real 10 ft × 3 ft wall — a common size for a small garden retrofit — using Standard 12×4×8 blocks, straight, economy concrete tier, with cap blocks and backfill gravel both on.

Blocks per row: 10 ft ÷ 1 ft (block length) = 10. Rows needed: 3 ft ÷ 0.33 ft (4-inch block height) = 9 rows. That's 90 blocks before waste; straight walls carry a 5% allowance, so 90 × 1.05 = 94.5, rounded up to 95 blocks.

Cap blocks: 10 (one per foot of wall length). Base gravel: a trench roughly 1.33 ft wide by 6 inches deep along the 10 ft run works out to about 0.25 cubic yards. Backfill gravel, the drainage zone behind the wall: about 0.56 cubic yards. Landscape fabric: about 87 sqft, covering both the trench and the face.

At Home Depot's economy tier ($3.50 a block), 95 blocks run $332.50. Cap blocks at $4.50 each add $45. Gravel — base plus backfill, at $50 a cubic yard — adds about $40, and fabric at $0.30 a square foot adds roughly $26. All in: about $444 for a small garden wall, before you've called anyone.

Premium concrete block roughly steps up finish quality (more consistent color, sometimes a tumbled face) at about 1.5-2x the economy price. Natural stone is the biggest jump, over 3x economy, and it's usually chosen for visible, front-of-house walls where appearance matters as much as function.

Gravel and fabric are the line items people forget to budget for.
