How to use this calculator

1. Measure your wall

Measure your wall's total length and height in feet. Height should run from the bottom of the buried base course — most walls bury their first course below grade, ideally below your local frost line for stability — to the top of the finished cap, not just the visible face. For curved or terraced walls, measure each straight run separately and add the lengths together; the calculator handles the extra cutting waste as a percentage, not as separate geometry.

2. Choose a block size and shape

Pick a block size — Standard 12×4×8, Wide 16×6×12, or Extra-wide 18×6×12 — then set your wall shape: straight, curved, or terraced. Shape drives the waste allowance in your block count: straight walls carry 5%, curved 10%, and terraced (stepped) walls 15%, since each step adds more cut edges.

3. Set your gravel depth and backfill option

Base gravel depth defaults to 6 inches, a standard compacted-base thickness for a garden wall — go deeper if you're building below the frost line, standard practice in most of Canada. Leave backfill gravel switched on unless your soil genuinely free-drains: this is the drainage zone behind the wall, and skipping it is the most common cause of wall failure, especially with freeze-thaw cycles working against a waterlogged wall.

4. Review your blocks, gravel, and cost breakdown

The formula we use

Here's the exact math. Wall face area is length × height. Blocks per row is wall length divided by block length, rounded up; rows needed is wall height divided by block height, rounded up. Multiply those together, then apply your shape's waste factor — straight ×1.05, curved ×1.10, terraced ×1.15 — and round up to a whole block.

Cap blocks, if switched on, add one finishing block per block-length along the wall — for the Standard block (12 inches long), that's one cap per linear foot; the Wide and Extra-wide presets need proportionally fewer. This capping row sits on top of the waste-adjusted total, not folded into it.

Gravel: a base trench two block-depths wide, filled to your chosen depth, converted from cubic feet to cubic yards (27 cubic feet per yard). Backfill gravel, the drainage wedge behind the wall, assumes a 1 ft wide zone running half the wall's height. Landscape fabric covers the trench width plus the wall face, doubled for both sides of the gravel zone.

A worked example

Let's walk through a real 10 ft × 3 ft wall using Standard 12×4×8 blocks, straight, economy tier, with cap blocks and backfill gravel both on — the same geometry as our US example, priced in Canadian dollars.

Blocks per row: 10 ft ÷ 1 ft = 10. Rows needed: 3 ft ÷ 0.33 ft = 9 rows. That's 90 blocks before waste; straight walls carry a 5% allowance, so 90 × 1.05 = 94.5, rounded up to 95 blocks.

Cap blocks: 10 (one per foot of wall length). Base gravel: about 0.25 cubic yards. Backfill gravel: about 0.56 cubic yards. Landscape fabric: about 87 sqft.

At C$5.75 a block — a regional average from suppliers like Chamberlain Timber Mart — 95 blocks cost C$546.25. Cap blocks at C$5.50 each add C$55. Gravel — base plus backfill, at C$55 a cubic yard — adds about C$44, and fabric at C$0.30 a square foot adds roughly C$26. All in: around C$671 for a small garden wall.

Do you need a permit or approval?

Retaining wall rules in Canada are set provincially, and Ontario's are unusually specific compared to most of the country.

Under the Ontario Building Code (Division A, 1.1.2.2(2)(c)), a retaining wall with more than 1,000 mm — about 3.3 ft — of exposed height needs a Part 4 engineered design, meaning an engineer's stamped drawings, not just a permit application. Below that height, many municipalities still require a building permit even without the engineering requirement, so check locally regardless of height. Separately, OBC section 9.8.8 requires a guardrail wherever the drop next to a walking surface exceeds 600 mm, about 2 ft, relevant if your wall creates a raised patio, path, or terrace above it, not just for the wall itself.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping backfill gravel to save money. Drainage, not the blocks themselves, is what actually holds most walls up — freeze-thaw cycles make this worse on a waterlogged wall.
  • Not digging the base course below the frost line. In colder regions, frost heave will move an under-founded wall over a winter or two.
  • Guessing at waste % instead of picking the right shape. Straight, curved, and terraced carry genuinely different allowances — 5%, 10%, and 15% — so picking "straight" for a stepped terrace wall leaves you short.
  • Building over 1,000mm in Ontario without engineered drawings. Division A 1.1.2.2(2)(c) triggers Part 4 design at that height, not just a permit application.
  • Skipping cap blocks to save a few dollars. An uncapped top row is exposed to water intrusion that erodes the wall from the top down.
  • Designing around a block size your local supplier doesn't stock. Canadian retaining wall suppliers are regional and inconsistent — confirm dimensions before finalizing your count, since swapping presets changes your row count, not just your total.
