The formula we use
Here's the exact math. Deck area is length × width. We add your pattern's waste allowance — straight ×1.10, diagonal ×1.15, herringbone ×1.20, picture-frame ×1.12 — to get total area with waste. Divide that by board coverage (board length × 0.458 ft effective width) and round up to get boards needed. The 0.458 ft figure is the effective width of a standard 5.5-inch nominal composite board, once you account for the gap left between boards for drainage and expansion.
This is the part worth sitting with: board length changes boards needed, but it does not change your waste percentage. A 16 ft board covers more area per board than a 12 ft board, so you need fewer of them for the same deck — but the waste allowance itself stays fixed at whatever your pattern sets. And in the Canadian market specifically, the cheapest board length isn't always the longest or the shortest — it depends on how board pricing steps up per length, which we'll show in the worked example below.

A worked example
Let's walk through a real 12 ft × 16 ft deck — 192 sqft — straight pattern, mid-tier composite, hidden fasteners on.
Total area with waste: 192 × 1.10 = 211.2 sqft. At 16 ft boards (7.328 sqft per board), that's 211.2 ÷ 7.328 = 28.8, rounded up to 29 boards. At C$80 per 16 ft board, that's C$2,320.
Here's a genuinely useful Canadian-market quirk: 16 ft is actually the cheapest board length for this deck, not the longest or shortest.
